All Rio Grande County Offices will be closed January 19, 2026, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day 

Due to additional State changes to property tax requirements and subsequent software changes, property tax notices will be delayed. Property tax amounts for 2025 payable in 2026 will be available by the end of January. You are welcome to contact us for more information @ Treasurers Office 719-657-2747.


The Rio Grande County Clerk & Recorder's office will be closed on Wednesday, January 21, 2026. Staff will be attending training for the computer upgrade of the motor vehicle system. The office will reopen at 7am on Thursday morning for regular business hours. Motor Vehicles, Titles & Registrations, License Plates

Driver’s License or Picture Identification (Secure and Verifiable Identification) required on all new registrations, title transfers, permits, and placards.

Proof of Insurance required on all permit and license plate purchases and renewals. VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) Inspections required on all vehicles purchased out of state or with out of state titles. Inspections are done by Colorado law enforcement agencies.

Effective June 1, 2009 a late fee will be charged for delinquent registrations. The late fee will apply to renewals past the 1 month grace period, vehicles not registered within 60 days of purchase, and vehicles not registered within 90 days of residency in Colorado. State law requires vehicles to be currently registered whether the vehicle is used or not.
